If you don't want to wait a week to take a shower, you can pay extra to have it sent overnight. I found the Whirlpool website, where they offer the replacement kit for $8.00 shipping (ground only). From everything I've read, I dont' feel very confident that this will last more than a few months. After a half-day spent obtaining the part, draining the water heater, removing the bad part and installing the new one, I now have hot water again. I noticed dozens of these same water heaters still on the shelves, with no mention of the 'special offer' Whirlpool gives on the replacement kits.

He said he had just received another shipment of gas valves (it sounded like they went through a lot of these!) and they were $54.00 each.

I told him I had been dealing with this issue for several days already and did not want to wait several more days to be mailed a replacement kit for something that shouldn't need replacing in the first place. I called Lowes and was told to contact Whirlpool customer service to order a replacement kit.
